Post-Operative Physiotherapy
The team at MSO Physio offers a comprehensive land-based post-operative physiotherapy service at our clinics in South London and Surrey. Post-operative physiotherapy begins almost as soon as you come back to the ward after your operation and can be as important as the operation itself.
Due to advances in surgery and anaesthetics it is now common to only spend one or two days in hospital before going home and you will see the in-patient physiotherapist before being discharged. After a couple of days recuperation at home the post-operative physiotherapy can start in earnest. The simple advice that we give our patients is to take regular pain relief and to do be diligent in doing your exercises until our expert team of South London and Surrey based physiotherapists can take over.
Post-operative physiotherapy can be painful at times but the effort will be worth it in the long run and you will need good pain relief and often ice therapy in order to achieve this. It is important to follow any specific instructions given by your consultant in terms of weight bearing or range of motion. The physiotherapists at MSO Physio will take over your care anything from 3 to 4 days post-op and can visit you at home if required for the first couple of sessions, until you are able to attend either our South London and Surrey based clinics.
Your post-operative physiotherapy can last anywhere from a few weeks to a year depending on the procedure so do check with your consultant how long your recovery is likely to be and speak to your insurer if required.

Total Knee Replacement
Total knee replacement is the complete replacement of the joint surfaces for the treatment of arthritis. It is usually a very successful operation but can be very painful in the early stages.
Following total knee replacement it is important to have good pain management and stay in close touch with your GP or consultant to ensure that this is managed. Many people undergoing total knee replacement often go home with ice therapy devices such as CryoCuff, but if this is not the case ensure that you have ice packs or similar to help reduce your swelling and for additional pain relief post-op.
The expert physios at MSO Physio in Sutton and Woking can visit you at home if required for your first visit but we would encourage you to come to the clinic as soon as able as this will ensure that you are moving more normally and using your muscles.
The first three weeks following total knee replacement are normally the worst and we usually follow-up our patients until approximately three months post-op depending on the requirements of the individual. Our physiotherapists will advise you about pain relief, walking, stairs, exercise and fitness and if required about return to sports and recreational activities further along inyour recovery.
Our aim is to help you achieve 100% of your goals of having a total knee replacement and we will stay in close contact with your consultant as required.
Total Hip Replacement
Total hip replacement is the complete replacement of the joint surfaces of the hip for the treatment of arthritis.
Patients undergoing total hip replacement will typically only spend one or two days in hospital and then following a couple of days of recuperation at home the post-operative physio can start.
Total hip replacements despite being major orthopaedic surgery are typically less painful than knee replacements and patients tend to bounce back quicker. Depending on the surgical approach you will either have weak buttocks or thigh muscles and our expert physiotherapists at MSO Physio in Sutton and Woking can guide you through the rehabilitation process back to and probably better than your pre-operative levels.
Following total hip replacement it is important to fully rehabilitate your muscles as this will help with walking, stair climbing, driving and getting back to any previous recreational or sports activities.
Whatever your goals following total hip replacement our physiotherapists are here to help and will work closely with you and your consultant to deliver the best result possible. Our aim is always 100% recovery.

ACL Reconstruction
ACL reconstruction typically affects a younger sporty population and can affect a person’s ability to get back to their previous levels of activity and fitness.
At MSO Physio we regularly look after patients following ACL reconstruction and have excellent rehab and gym facilities to help you to achieve your goals.
There has been extensive research regarding ACL reconstruction and return to sports and our team of physio will ensure that you are set specific goals and targets designed to reduce the chance of repeat injury and maximise your potential of returning to your previous level of activity. Following ACL reconstruction you can expect a minimum of 6-9 months rehabilitation to return to non-contact sports and at least 9-12 months for contact sports.
Research into return to sport has demonstrated that proper restoration of muscle strength, power, agility and confidence can greatly increase the chances of returning to your previous level of sport and also reduce the risk of further injury.
The physiotherapy team at MSO Physio is here to work hard with you to achieve this.
Spinal Surgery
Spinal surgery has advanced greatly in the last decade and operations such as disc trimming and decompressions are now performed as day cases or with only one or two days in hospital.
The advances in surgical expertise, precision and pain management has also meant that post-operative pain and disability can be greatly reduced enabling patients to return to activity sooner and recover quicker.
At MSO Physio we have established links with leading spinal surgeons and are used to looking after patients following spinal surgery from relatively minor disc operations to fusions and disc replacements. Shoulder Surgery
Shoulder surgery varies greatly and post-operative regimes vary accordingly. The expert team of physiotherapists at MSO Physio are able to look after all types of shoulder surgery from arthroscopic decompressions to stabilisations, labral repairs and joint replacements.
Depending on your shoulder surgery you may require a sling or brace strictly for a number of weeks. During this time physiotherapy is normally limited to passive movements and maintaining range of motion and function of the neck, elbow and wrist.
Early on good pain relief is essential and protecting the operation and any repairs that have taken place is of great importance too. Following simple decompression shoulder surgery, active rehabilitation can commence almost immediately but following more extensive surgery such as rotator cuff or labral repair this may be delayed by a couple of weeks. Your surgeon will let you know when active physiotherapy can start.
At MSO Physio we have all of the skills and equipment available to guide you through your rehabilitation and return to activity process. Plus, with access to full gym facilities at all of our sites we can work with you back to high performance activity as required.
Depending on your shoulder surgery and goals your rehabilitation may take anywhere from a few weeks to 6 months and more. Our aim, as always, is your 100% recovery.
Physiotherapy At Home
Orthopaedic surgery is classed as major surgery and can result in the inability to get out and about for a period of time. Although at MSO Physio we actively encourage people to attend for their physiotherapy at one of our clinics, we are aware that sometimes this is just not possible.
Physiotherapy at home during the early recovery phase can help to eliminate fears and anxieties about moving or enable you to function better within your environment.
Physiotherapy at home makes use of the equipment and environment within your own home giving you the necessary tools and ideas to perform your exercises effectively. At MSO Physio we are happy to offer physiotherapy at home within a suitable radius from our clinics and during those early periods when you really cannot get out.
If someone can bring you to the clinic and you are able to walk short distances and climb stairs we would encourage you to come to the clinic as soon as possible as this can be a major confidence boost and important in your overall recovery.
Home visits following orthopaedic surgery usually last up to one hour plus travel time so will cost more than clinic visits, please see the price guides for more information.
