Orthopaedic Rehabilitation
MSO Physio offers a comprehensive land-based orthopaedic rehabilitation programme at our clinics in London and Surrey. Orthopaedic rehabilitation is the specific exercise and training required to return to your previous level of function following your orthopaedic surgery. Orthopaedic rehabilitation will be different for everyone and will depend on the type and complexity of the surgery that you have had and any special instructions from your consultant.
Our Sutton and Woking clinics are fully equipped to look after you from the early, right through to the late stages of your recovery and our aim is to get you back to 100% or to your previous levels of function and beyond. Early orthopaedic rehabilitation may include the use of electronic muscle stimulators (NMS) for muscles that are particularly weak following surgery and our clinics in Sutton and Woking have access to full gym facilities, which will be important for your later recovery.
The team at MSO Physio in Sutton and Woking has great experience in rehabilitating anything from spinal surgery to ACL reconstruction and our team of expert physiotherapists is supported by sports massage therapists, Pilates and personal training to maximise your recovery and rehabilitation.

Complex Muscle Stimulation
MSO Physio has invested in the latest technology and frequently use Compex muscle stimulation as part of our treatment following orthopaedic surgery.
Compex muscle stimulation uses very low amplitude electrical frequencies delivered directly to the muscles to help build early strength and very importantly prevent wasting of muscle secondary to your surgery.
Compex muscle stimulators represent the forefront of electronic muscle stimulation (NMS) technology and our expert physiotherapists have all undergone additional training in the safe and effective use of this cutting-edge technology. Via our links with Donjoy UK, we can arrange for you to hire your own machine post-operatively as an early adjunct to your exercise rehabilitation.
Recent research has demonstrated improved early outcomes for knee surgery following the use of Compex muscle stimulation in the first four weeks and at MSO Physio we have found it to be very useful with our patients.
The technology is safe and can be applied to various parts of the body depending on the requirements of the surgery and the individual, your physiotherapist will discuss the use of Compex muscle stimulation with you as required.
Early Rehabilitation
Early rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery revolves around a few main areas. Firstly and most importantly is good pain relief.
Our expert physiotherapists can discuss your pain relief with you and offer practical ideas to maximise your pain control, improve your sleep and will write to your GP if required.
Controlling swelling and preventing muscle wasting is very important and during your early rehabilitation, we will advise you on the correct use of ice therapy, compression and elevation and may work with Compex muscle stimulation as required.
Protection of your operation or repair is also of great importance during the first phase of rehabilitation. Our expert physiotherapists can help you with braces and supports that have been provided in hospital and teach you important things like managing stairs properly and correct any walking problems that you may have.
For spinal surgery, simple things like getting in and out of bed can be covered and for surgery of the shoulders and arms talking about practical solutions for day to day living can be important, such as hygiene issues and washing under your armpits.
Early rehabilitation can also involve referral onward for hydrotherapy and liaison with your water-based physiotherapist before you return to land-based physiotherapy. At all stages we will keep in touch with your consultant keeping you at the centre of our care.

Condition Specific Rehabilitation
Every orthopaedic surgery is unique. There are of course great similarities in the procedures performed but each one is performed on an individual person with specific problems, needs, pre-operative fitness, post-operative goals and particular circumstances.
Our goal at MSO Physio is to provide condition specific rehabilitation, not just a one stop shop for an exercise leaflet. The first area to understand is the exact operation you have had, our expert physiotherapists can then start to guide your individual recovery, to do this please try to have your operation notes and any letters from your consultant ready for your first appointment.
Not all repairs and reconstructions are the same either and your consultant may have specific instructions for your physiotherapist which can be worked into your personal condition specific rehabilitation. Each person also has their own end goals and expectations following orthopaedic surgery and we will discuss your needs and goals with you to ensure we truly work individually with you.
Condition specific rehabilitation ultimately means that we will individualise your care based on you, your surgery and your goals and expectations. Our aim is to restore you to 100% of your previous self and in a lot of cases following orthopaedic surgery, better than before.
Late Stage Rehabilitation
Late stage rehabilitation is where the really hard work of orthopaedic rehabilitation often starts. Having restored day to day function, controlled your pain and regained range of motion and early strength, our expert physiotherapists can then start to work towards your ultimate goals.
Whether you want to complete that long walk that you were always meaning to do before your knee got bad, get back on your skis, play 18 holes of golf or something more challenging altogether, we are ready to work with you to the next level.
With access to full gym facilities at our clinics in South London and Surrey plus dedicated personal training services, we can help with your late stage rehabilitation. Our expert physiotherapists can offer you advice on gym programmes, progressive walking plans, sports and activity specific programmes and ultimately return to sports if that is your goal.
Late stage rehabilitation may involve weight-training, plyometrics, agility training and will always be directed by what you need in order to obtain that final goal. Our aim is your 100% recovery, whatever that may mean.

Return to Sports
Depending on your surgery and type of sport, return to sports is often a sensible and achievable outcome, following orthopaedic surgery. For our younger athletes undergoing shoulder repairs or ACL reconstructions this may mean a return to contact or high performance sport and this requires time, patience and dedication to rehabilitation and training. Our physiotherapists are ready to work with you to achieve your goals but you have to be ready to put in the hard effort.
Often return to sport programmes following orthopaedic surgery can take many months and it can be hard to stay focused. Our expert physiotherapists will set you clear goals and targets to achieve at key stages through your recovery and by hitting these targets you are maximising your chance of returning to your previous level of sport. It is also possible to return to sports following joint surgery and many people return to skiing, golf and even running-based sports following joint reconstructions, this will need to be done in close liaison with your surgeon and it may be that you return to a lower level of your chosen sport but importantly with considerably less pain and disability.
Our physiotherapists are happy to work with you to maximise your strength, control and endurance to achieve your maximum potential, this may take several months so be ready for hard work.
