What Is a Mummy MOT?

A Mummy MOT is a comprehensive postnatal physiotherapy assessment for women who have given birth, whether by vaginal delivery or caesarean section. Carried out by one of our specialist women’s health physiotherapists at our Sutton clinic, it checks how your body, particularly your core, pelvic floor and posture, has recovered since birth, and identifies anything that needs further support before you return to exercise, lifting or everyday life with your baby.

Why a Postnatal Check Matters

Pregnancy and birth place significant demands on the body, yet a dedicated postnatal physiotherapy check is not routinely offered as part of NHS aftercare. Many new mothers experience some degree of abdominal separation (diastasis recti) or pelvic floor weakness in the weeks and months after birth. Left unaddressed, this can lead to back or pelvic pain, a persistent tummy bulge, or bladder and bowel symptoms. A Mummy MOT gives you a clear, professional picture of where you are in your recovery, and a plan to help you rebuild strength safely.

When Should You Book Your Mummy MOT?

Following your Mummy MOT, you will receive a personalised plan based on what we find. This may include a home exercise programme, guidance on safely lifting and carrying your baby, hands-on treatment, or referral to our ante and postnatal Pilates classes for ongoing support. Where needed, we can also refer you within our wider Women’s Health team for further pelvic health treatment.
